Say Anything is more than just a teen romance-that's like calling Nirvana "just grunge". It's an intelligent and very likeable love story with a witty script by Cameron Crowe and Lloyd Dobler, one of the most three-dimensional teenagers in a movie ever. Cameron Crowe is skilled at making thoughtful love stories, and here's he at the top of his game. And everyone will remember John Cusack's role as the main character of the story.
Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) is one of those guys you want to be friends with in high school-though not exactly a straight-A student, a kind likeable guy with a small group of friends. He wants to go out with Diane Court (Ion Skye), a class valedictorian. She has just won a fellowship to an English college and is only home for 16 weeks. After a few dates, Lloyd and Diane become serious about their relationship, although sex is not an issue. But issues with her dad (which I won't ruin) slowly start to erode their relationship.
The script has many memorable lines like, "I gave her my heart. She gave me a pen," and "Are you here because you need someone or because you need me? Forget it. I don't care." Cameron Crowe has an eye for humor, too. In one memorable scene, a heartbroken Lloyd tries to forget by talking to some men at a Gas-N'Slurp. And how can anyone forget Lloyd trying to win back Diane by playing "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel on a boombox outside her house.
Out of all the teenage movies, Say Anything is among the best. If you can't say something nice, don't Say Anything at all. |
