The Rocky films are by far the best films ever made! There are too many scenes to comment on, but I'd like to pick a few from each movie to show exactly why these are so great.
In the first one, a scene that always stands out is when Rocky is staring at the picture of Apollo in the ring, then goes home and gets in bed with Adrien. "All I want to do is go the distance.." You can't help but cheer for him. The last moments of this film, when Rocky says to Micky, "You stop the fight and I'll kill you.." shows the heart of the fighter. Boxing fans wish that fighters were as honorable and as great as Rocky and Apollo.
My favorite line out of the second one is, "I never asked you to stop being a woman..don't ask me to stop being a man." The interpersonal relationships that Rocky has drives the series into greatness. The emotional conversations he has and the pull of what is right and what is necessity. The movie has everything!
I love the scenes where Apollo trains Rocky in the III one. Building such an awesome friendship and having Rocky being retaught boxing in an entire different way to take down Clubber. Another great scene is when Apollo says, "it's over..." as Rocky stops running. Adrien pushes him until he admits he's afraid. It's these human instances that make the Rocky series so brilliant!!
IVAN DRAGO...Why did he have to kill Apollo!! I love this movie! I hate that Apollo had to die, but it led to the scene of Adrien yelling, "You can't win!!" and of course the "No Easy Way Out" montage. BRILLIANT! I love how Rocky keeps his training old school while Drago utilizes all of the new technology and in the end Rocky triumphs!!
The fifth offers SOOO much. My favorite scene is when Tommy knocks down Pauly and Rocky's entire demeanor changes. "You knocked him down why don't you try knocking me down......My ring's outside.." What is so great about this movie is that is shows the constant honor that is so embedded in Rocky's heart. As Tommy Gunn jumps him from behind and takes every cheap shot known to man, Rocky still has the decency to say "one more round." No one would have blamed him for taking advantage of that situation. NO one would have boo'd him for jumping Tommy from behind, but his respect for boxing and his honor wouldn't let him! This movie has so much great dialogue. From Adrien telling Rocky that the difference between him and Tommy was that Rocky had HEART, or when Rocky says, "I have problems I have to fight.." or finally George Washington Duke, "touch me and I'll sue.." "touch me and I'll sue.." Who didn't want to see that ruthless promoter get knocked down? "sue me for what?"
I know I was only supposed to be reviewing the first Rocky, but there wasn't an area where I could review all of them. These films have such a great cast. Burt Young is one of my favorite all time actors, and he turned Pauly into such a complex character. Pauly would die for anyone of his friends, but at the same time his instincts are so selfish that he always looks out for himself first. Talia Shire is so great! SHE showed the evolution of Adrien, from mouse to strong woman brilliantly. Carl Weathers, (I wish there was a way to bring back Apollo) brought out so much in the fighter. Charismatic and 'real' all at the same time! Burgess Meredith was so GREAT! The scene that always stands out when I think of Micky is in the first one, when he wants to coach Rocky. That one scene where Rocky breaks down screaming and Mickey stands outside the door then leaves a broken man. FINALLY, Sylvester Stallone. Everything Sly does is gold!!! He hasn't made a bad movie and the Rockys are the best.
NOW I wait for the sixth installment! I can only hope that Pauly,Adrien, and of course Rocky survive!!!!! |
