Peter Sellers delivers more laughs

“Revenge of the Pink Panther” is about as good as “The Pink Panther”. Is it as good as “The Pink Panther Strikes Again” or “A Shot in the Dark?” Not quite, but there are still many new, hilarious laughs this time. Better news is that Peter Sellers is still great, and Blake Edwards’ direction is still first-rate. Hey, that rhymes!
In the story of “Revenge of the Pink Panther”, a dying company finds itself failing because of the suspicious skills of Inspector Clouseau (Peter Sellers), and the company’s head official Douvier (Robert Webber) proposes that Clouseau be killed. Everyone at the company agrees.
A freak accident occurs when a car crashes into a tree. Killed is a wanted criminal, but because his body was found wearing Clouseau’s clothes, everyone believes that it’s Clouseau who’s dead. Then Clouseau’s crazy former boss Dreyfuss is finally released from the mental facility, and when he hears of Clouseau’s “death”, he becomes the new Chief Inspector. Dreyfuss is filled with joy because of his belief that Clouseau is finally gone. But he’s not! Clouseau travels throughout France wondering why people believe him to be dead, and then Dreyfuss ends up getting glimpses of him, causing Dreyfuss to faint immediately.
Clouseau’s friend Cato (Burt Kwoak) is back, and this time he’s a main character. The twosome find themselves sleuthing around the country to discover the evil plans of Douvier and his company. Then Clouseau and Cato run into the secretary of the company, Simone (Dyan Cannon), who ends up on their side after Douvier betrays her. Simone is obviously the woman of the film, but the problem is that she and Clouseau don’t have good chemistry and never kiss. This is the only flaw in the film.
Still, “Revenge of the Pink Panther” is a very entertaining comedy. It may not be as good as the two prequels before it, but the good thing about it is that Peter Sellers delivers more laughs, none of them familiar in anyway. This is undoubtedly one of the very funniest of all the Pink Panther films.
