For all you younguns who don't know about the dangers of the dread "marihuana," particularly in the very swinging late 1930s, then this is the flick for you. Not only do you get to watch the ill-fated "lindy" dance crazy and its associationg with this narcotic, you also get to watch what is most likely the first hit-and-run in cinematic history.
Basically, the story is that a spry middle aged couple (shamefully without children; a little sperm-count reduction going on?) have sold their souls to Satan and become Narcotic distributors of the first degree. What follows is the description of this sordid descent into wanton violence, murder, and eventual insanity. Furthermore, the couple drag in the unsuspecting youth of the town to their "marihuana flat" to further strip the community of their very high moral fiber.
Although not the most technically stunning acheivement, it does encapsulate a period and provides for many a laugh. I think my roommate bought it for 99 cents at a bargain bin; I don't know if I would buy it per se, but a rental (if stocked) is definitely in order. |
