An attest to the goodness of the human spirit
by Max (movies profile)

Kurosawa's last film with Mifune is not a samurai slasher, but a deep psycological look at life and humanity. This movie is not for those who require constant stimulation, because at 3 hours, it runs a tad long. Supporting characters enter the screen, tell their sad story (which usually turns us into emotional mush), and then disapear from the picture. Centered around an underfunded "hospital" in japan, the movie is duly sad and hopeful as we see utter despair offset by great acts of kindness on the parts of the patients and the doctors. Filmed in the 1960's, but retains a genuine 1800's feel to it. |
