Typical James Dean, This Time a Worthy "Rebel"

This film solidified James Dean's image as the "badboy" of Hollywood. His character in "Rebel Without a Cause" has many surfaces to it, and Dean played them with real anxiety. The director did a good job not only focusing on one character, but focusing on three teenagers, all three having their own problems. This gives us three points of view and more understanding of how hard being a teenager can really be.
There is one major flaw, however, concerning the movie. It comes at the end, when the three main characters are alone in a mansion. The screenplay, instead of freeing the characters by showing emotion, thought, and feelings, imprisons these dynamic characters into submission. They are barely shown at the end and are forced to simply flee from authority instead of expressing themselves more so with erratic behavior in unpredictable situations.Because that is when the film is most effective, when it shows these teen coping with problems they dont completely understandand and feel helpless about. The ending made their characters more predictable and bland, which is the opposite when it comes to teenagers.
Nonetheless, "Rebel Without A Cause" will always be a memorable film, being the first movie to effectively potray the realism of what many people call "teeen angst". |
