Rebel Without a Cause is a classic

Rebel Without a Cause is a classic and if you love this movie you have to read the book Live Fast, Die Young: The Wild Ride of Making Rebel Without a Cause by Lawrence Frascella and Al Weisel. This was the first movie that looked at teenagers from their point of view and the book tells you how that happened, how director Nicholas Ray gave his actors James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo and even the actors who played the gang members the freedom to put their own lives and emotions on the screen and you can really see what a difference that made when you compare this movie to similar movies of the time like Blackboard Jungle that saw teenagers as nothing more than a social problem. The book also tells you how the gay themes in the film were deliberately put there and shows the importance of Sal Mineo's character playing "the first gay teenager in film." I've always loved this movie but Live Fast, Die Young made me appreciate its importance in film and cultural history even more. Go see this movie and then read the book.
