It is almost headscratching to comprehend that Alfred Hitchcock, director of this masterpiece of the macabre, never won any other Oscars except for REBECCA, as Best Picture. Lawrence Olivier is superb as Mr. de Winter, a widower who has lost his wife and is seemingly thoroughly obsessed with her, as is his housekeeper, Grand Dame Judith Anderson in a sublimely eerie performance. And poor Joan Fontaine, she has to live up to the memories of Rebecca, whose permanant stamp is everywhere in the gloomy old house on the clifftop in this marveously atmospheric mystery. If you have never seen this film then you must try to obtain it somehow, although it might be difficult, as it doesn't seem to be available anywhere these days. Hopefully, it will be released on DVD in the future, but if you still have a VHS player, it is available on VHS. In any event...do try and see it. It is a magnificent piece of cinema! |
