I loved this movie

I first saw The Razor’s Edge a few years ago. Since that time I purchased it both on VHS and DVD. This movie is possibly my favorite. It’s certainly in the top ten all time favorites.
Larry Darryl’s story, of going from superficiality, to war and suffering, to seeker, to finder, is a story I can relate to. Some critics of the movie didn’t think Bill Murray was right for this part. I disagree. Bill Murray was perfect for the role. He brings a certain human reality to the character of Larry Darryl.
Teresa Russell is drop dead gorgeous in her role as Sophie, which doesn’t hurt the movie at all. The chemistry between the characters does a wonderful role at demonstrating how we humans get stuck in our paradigms, our truths, and struggle to see anything else.
In the movie Larry Darryl must not only struggle to find truth he must also struggle with the expectations of others. These expectations are often destructive to themselves and others. It is against this backdrop that Larry becomes enlightened. I love the scene where he is sitting on top of the mountain, freezing, and discovers that, as the Heart Sutra says, there is nothing to attain.
The movie does a pretty good job of telling the central theme of Somerset Maugham’s original story even though there are some significant alterations to the story. As I understand it the original story of Larry Darryl was based on a real person. The real “Larry Darryl” became enlightened after an encounter with Sri Ramana Maharshi.
This is one of those rare movies that tells a story that actually means something profound. I recommend it to everyone who ask. |
