In this superb play, which was turned into a classic film, we watch a southside Chicago family dream of getting out and moving up in the world, only to live through their disappointments when the $10,000 that was left to the matriarch is stolen by a supposed investor friend of the son's (Poitier...always sublime!). Everything about this film is flawless...the script, the acting, the direction...so, I was absolutely shocked when I looked it up in the Oscar book to find that it wasn't nominated for anything! Is this because of the subject matter, I wonder? This certainly must have been groundbreaking cinema in 1961, as the entire cast is black, and the subject matter is certainly not flattering for the one white character that manages to find his way into their apartment to try and talk them out of moving into a "white" neighborhood. He is considered the welcoming committee: and by today's standard, he would have been lynched if he went into someone's home and suggested such a thing. In any event, Oscar or no Oscar, this is one terrific movie. I'd suggest it to anyone who enjoys riveting, compelling cinema. Five stars!!! |
