The most striking part of Raging Bull is the cinematography. It was filmed in black and white mainly because of the violence. We see close up the relentlessness of LaMotta (DeNiro), with blood and sweat everywhere.
The main question in the film is: Does LaMotta's personal life interfere with his boxing, or does his boxing interfere with his personal life? When LaMotta's wife says another boxer is "pretty," Jake goes nuts and nearly knocks the guy's nose off. On the other hand, his career as a boxer might be the cause for his uncontrollably fury in the house.
The ending did not strike me. Yes, LaMotta has given up boxing, but so what? In my opinion, the movie was about his youth, so I did not see the point in showing the aftermath. |
