Not that this 1967 film by Mel Brooks is excellent or even close, but it certainly is about one million percent better than the 2005 FLOP film of the same title and subject matter. Gene Wilder is his usual "hysterial" self; but the funniest person in this film is Dick Shawn as "LSD". You already know the story: Zero Mostel & Gene Wilder collaborate on a Broadway that is sure to be a "flop", so they can make a bazillion bucks. Only...the show is so painfully hilariously awful, it becomes a smash! Of course, this film was transformed into a bonafide smash on Broadway, and was then made into an unwatchable disaster starring Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane. Confused? If so...just do yourself a favor and watch THIS. It'll satisfy your curiosity and you will get a few chuckles out of it...but nothing will prepare you for the BEST SCENE IN THE MOVIE...an all showstopping tune from the musical entitled, "Springtime for Hitler". It's classic, hilarious Brooks! |
