The Poseidon Adventure was the first of a succession of "Disaster" movies in the early 1970's and was considered to be the mother of that genre. It boasted a large (mostly former) all-star cast and was nominated for 8 Academy Awards--winning for best song (The Morning After) and Special Effects. Thirty years ago, this was a pretty good movie; unfortunately, it has not held up very well over time. The special effects that won an Oscar for this film look fake and cheesy when compared to todays industrial light and magic effects, and the actors (with the exception of Shelley Winters and Roddy McDowell)probably gave the worst performances of their careers (Gene Hackman was so bad he's laughable). Still, the Special Effects were "Oscar Worthy" 30 years ago, so it gets an A+ for that. Indeed, this was my favorite movie for four or five years when I was younger. It just goes to show you that sometimes time does alter perceptions. |
