This comedy romance shows its age (65 years); however if you can overlok the poor acting l(thank goodness for acting schools!), the deep and witty story continues to put most modern movies to shame!!
The object of everyones affection is Tracy Lord (Hepburn), aka "The Red Head" (though tough to see that in Black and white).
Dexter Haven (Grant) is the charismatic, creative, passionate former husband, who has come back either to get her back or to get revenge.
George (Howard) is the very successful, respectable businessman who has worked his way up from working class beginnings. He clearly has what it takes to become even more successful. Unfortunately he puts all his energy into work, money and power, and seems only to want the Red Head as a trophy.
Macaulay Connor (Stewart) is the bookish professorial type, who is a talented writer. He seems to fall for Hepburn both for her glamour and becuase she can bring some passion and into his life. Like Grant, he is drawn to her intelligence and passion for life.
There are times I laughed and cried. Although often light and airy, there are also some deep moments questioning the purpose of life. There is some poking fun at the upper class, but it is much more a story about character than class.
In the end this is still an excellent movie. It shows the power of good writing! |
