Onibaba Brings Unique Kind of Tension
by F J (movies profile)
Apr 11, 2007
This is a real diamond in the rough. You don't find many well made, low-budget, black and white thrillers from the early 60's...let alone from Japan. Onibaba doesn't fit into the thriller-horror genre exactly, however, and while it does have a twist of the supernatural, it is more of a tension filled piece that draws its thrills from the relationship between the mother and daughter-in-law. The are both vulnerable and adept survivors in a violent, unpredictable badlands. The movie is very well filmed and still appears quite beautiful despite the B&W limitations. It is sexy, a little scary and intersting enough to stand on it's own more than 40 years after being released. |
