One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is an anti-establishment film that attacks conformity. There is a reason why all individuals are not free to do as they please. Humans are fundamentally destructive. When a group of people rebel against the establishment, most of those who rebel are conforming to the rebels, and their individuality is repressed. A world in which each individual is free to do as he pleases is a world in which rules are established that protect each individual's fundamental individual rights. These rules are firmly established in the highly individualistic American legal system. Conformity, to a degree, is beneficial for society, especially when people are conforming to rules that allow others to express their individuality. Conformity begets peace. Most people label conformity as bad and nonconformity as good, but it is not as simple as that. Both extremes are bad. Attacking one extreme does not validate the other extreme, for then anything can be validated based on how one frames the issue.
