Streisand was robbed of an Oscar nom for this one!

I am a huge Barbra Streisand fan and have recently began collecting all her movies. I am fascinated by her ability as an actress to recreate herself and yet stay true to who she is. In this film, Babs was robbed of an Oscar nom. I read somewhere that Yentyl overshadowed this film, but it should not have prevented Streisand from recieving an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Her layered performance of an upper class prostitute with a scarred childhood is superb. Streisand is calm, expolosive, shocking, touching, angry, loving, etc. Her character is an array of emotion that on the surface seems insanity. But it is not. It is the life of a woman with just as much pain as any other human being- she was just forced into defending herself against a client. I particularly love the scene where Streisand taps the glass in an attempt to prevent Dreyfuss from cross-examining her mother. The look on her face is priceless. It should also be noted that Dreyfuss is a dramatic force to be reckoned with that complements Claudia's personality perfectly. They are a real team. I want to be an attorney and this movie is the epitimy of a courtroom drama. Though the film is not as classic as Streisand's Funny Girl, The Way We Were or even the Prince Of Tides, it is certainly one of Streisand's finest dramatic performances. Shame on the Academy for not acknowledging her supreme talent. |
