A Cashew in a Jar Full of Nuts

Streisand, first of all, does her role service by downplaying her comedic talents, and playing up anger and resentment any woman under these circumstances would have. She is nuts, a little, this character--a wealthy woman who doesn't need to be a whore, but is one because of things that happened to her as a child. She wants to be in control of her life, and in bed, she is, for bucks. Dreyfuss is excelelnt as her foil, her defendant, and they do well together. The supporting cast, Karl Malden and Maureen Stapleton, especially, are perfectly cast. This is a courtroom drama with some surprises, some humor and loads of drama. Barbra was to be nominated for her role, but her Yentyl overshadowed it. The media made fun of her, as they so love to do, calling it Mentyl--HA! Not really. What's a good actress over 30 to do today? She is lucky that she has clout or she would have been resigned to just recording music (which would have been terrific too) after Nuts was released. This is good drama. I own it now, and watch it whenever I am in the mood. |
