Star power can make a movie work...

Ingredients To Make A Film Work:
1. Star Power. Pick a lead actor who has it. Acting can often be a distant second.
2. Surround that star with good supporting actors.
3. Let the star be the star. Overload the early part of the movie with macho scenes to give the star credibility.
4. Give the star some problem he or she has to resolve.
5. A great soundtrack.
This film gets it almost right. 4 out of 5 ain't bad. The soundtrack is atrocious, however. One key to making a memorable movie is that both the story and the soundtrack hold up over the years. This one doesn't. The music makes the movie seem dated. It almost makes you check the back of the video or dvd case and go, "When was this movie made, again?"
The supporting cast is great, except for Costner's love interest.
The story lagues a bit in sections, and there needed to be a believable love interest for Hackman and Costner's character. Sean Young was good, but she seemed better suited to being a promiscuous wife than somebody's extramarital lover. The role needed someone a little more seductive, like Rene Russo, Demi Moore, or someone else who better fits the role of a seductress. Someone you'd believe that Gene Hackman's character would risk his career to sleep around with.
However, the true brilliance of this movie is the fact that the real villain in this movie isn't Hackman's character, but his friend and confidant Scott Bryce, played by Will Patton.
What's really scary about this movie is that this kind of politics could and probably does happen.
As a guy, though, I'm shaking my head ruefully. All this over a chick. LOL |
