No Time For Sergeants is a classic for many reasons. It was the inspiration for Gomer Pyle, but it was also the first teaming up of Andy Griffith and Don Knotts (even though Knotts role was small in this one). Andy Griffith does a splendid job portraying the country bumkin who is forced into military service. Andy was so successful at this that he was originally picked to play Barney Fife with Don Knotts as the sheriff, but Andy and Don agreed that the roles should be reversed.
As to the movie itself, it is a great comedy whose only downside is the overlong run time. It goes on for about 20 minutes too long, but most will neither notice nor care.
Famous moments include Andy Griffith's assignment to P.L.O. (permanent latrine orderly), his bout with the psychiatrist (a hilarious bit), and his encounter with the spastic deterity examiner (played by Don Knotts). Definitely a must see. |
