A "must-add" to your movie comedy list

Along with "Some Like It Hot", "A Shot in the Dark", "Silver Streak", and "How to Murder Your Wife", add this one. A homely tale of a young backwoodsman with wisdom that belies his gentle manner and naivete. Andy Griffith's character is played steadfastly as a young Will Stockdale, drafted as an "Air Man" into the fledgling Air Force of the early 50s.
An ensemble of memorable characters surrounds him, including Don Knotts, and the perspicacious,persnickety, and whimpish Nick Adams as "Ben", later to have his own show, as a totally-different character-type, Johnny Yuma, "The Rebel". The two gloriously offset one another, as they complete indoctrination and go on to glory.
A simple story, elegantly told, with outstanding script and oscar-winning performances. A true comedy classic that never tires and has many a memorable line. |
