From the surprise opening scene to the tear-jerking final scene, no comic detail is overlooked. I loved the electric pepper mill, the stained carpet, the greedy staff, paddling to shore, and the close calls, but through it all, I loved the relationships best. Brilliant Walter Matthau was as magnificent as Danny Kaye was in The Court Jester. Enchanting Elaine May was as pitiable as Talia Shire was in Rocky. James Coco turned a cameo into an awe inspiring supporting role. The funny plot and sadly familiar theme were so entertaining that I forgot that I was learning about loyalty, dominance, dependency, and emotional growth. While other movies depict fast-moving montages with spirited music as acquaintances become friends and inevitable lovers, A New Leaf lays a clear foundation for a lasting and caring relationship built on mutual support in spite of every effort to avoid it. Thirty-five years later, I am still smiling and crying at the same time. I hope you see this movie because it will leave you with warm memories to treasure for a lifetime. |
