This is an absolutely delightful film. Cher deserved the Oscar she won for it. She is charming, funny, beautiful, romantic, scared, and sad all in one great performance. This is what a romantic comedy performance is supposed to look like. I would never have imagined that Cher would ever pull off something this great but she does. The supporting cast is uniformly fine with Olympia Dukakis a wonderful standout. She proves that there are many great actors on the stage turning in great work that moviegoers may never be lucky enough to see. She makes you wonder which stage actor will be the next one to find the perfect film role and break out into a major film performer. The script is just about perfect in every way as well. Finally, Norman Jewison has made many good films but who would have thought he would ever film something like this. Also, there is great soundtrack for romantics everywhere to hold hands to in the theater. You will be smiling when you leave the theater and that goodnight kiss may feel even a little bit more special than it usually does. |
