I owe my soul to the Company store

It would a fascinating way to study American history as seen through the operations of the coal industry.Watch this movie, then watch the documentary "Harlan County War"--when you get over being depressed, realize that not much has changed. This is a fictional account of the Pinkerton Detective Angency's investigation of the Irish miner's group the Hibernians and that group's more violent subgroup the Molly as an undercover agent, gaining the trust of the Molly's Sean Connery. He comes to realize that not everything is the way his bosses present it, and eventually comes to regret his part in bringing down the Molly Maguires--but it's too late for a change of conscience. It's still not too late for the 21st century coal companies, but I won't hold my breath. |
