Is he, or isn't he?

Putting Santa Claus on trial is a very modern idea. I can see it now. "How dare you sneak into houses and bring children gifts? How do you plea?"
I grew up on this movie. I started out on Chris's side. These days, I lean toward Maureen O'Hara's side. It's wrong to lie to children, but it's a crying shame that the truth has to so often be devoid of magic.
What I love most about this movie is that it leaves everything up to the viewer. It hands us all the clues and evidence, then steps back and says "Well, what do you think?" without being frustrating. Is Chris really Santa, or is he just a lonely old man? Mr. Negative scowls and says "Of course not." Ms. Positive merely smirks and says "Maybe. Just maybe." Children, hands down, say "Yes."
What a priceless gem! |
