Morbid noir melodrama

Regardless of whether you like her or not Joan Crawford was a force of nature on screen, a queen of the melodrama and 'Mildred Pierce' is one of the finest examples of this talent.
As Mildred she is not a perfect mother but a easily swayed woman who gives into her selfish daughter's every needs (brilliantly played by Ann Blyth) putting aside her unemployed but welling husband and basically forgetting her younger daughter.
The film is at one point a prime example of 1940's style woman's picture and at the other extreme a hard-hitting noir melodrama complete with flawed heroine and a murder,a dark film nonetheless. Even if your not a Crawford fan (she won a well deserved Oscar for the role) it's still worth your time.
The entire production is brilliant and the cast is a standout but of note in the supporting roles is Eve Arden as the wise-cracking best friend of Crawford.
A brilliant film. |
