By today's standards, the Maltese Falcon is hokey. Dated dialogue and melodramatic acting were the halmark of the day, and the Falcon had plenty of both. For all that, it was a honest movie that sucked you in and didn't let go of you until "The End" flashed on the screne. You cared about the characters and followed the convoluted story line attentivly. And it ended with heros, not untarnished heros, but heros, none the less.
Against the background of today's non-heros and the use of sex in place of story, the falcon stands as one tall bird. How good was it? It was good enough for the Sam Spade character to develop a quarter century life of its own.
Watch it with an open mind and no preformed conclusions and you may just find you have discovered a real jewel (pardon the pun). Bogart and the Falcon were made for each other. If you like it, next try Casabalanca or To Have and Have Not. Good watching!!
