This is a film that the WB took out of the vault and put on DVD to ride on the Tolkien wave created by New Line's new epic film saga. But this is a film that should have stayed in the darkness, and never, ever, ever come out.

If you have read the books, you can tell that this picture is very well adapted from Tolkien. It is almost too well adapted. Not to hurt any die-hard Rings fans (because I am one of them), but The Lord of the Rings story can sometimes drag on and on. But that works for the book, and what works for a book doesn't always work for a film. That is why Peter Jackson spiced up Tolkien's masterpiece for his New Line rendition. He knew what worked and what didn't. This movie just tries too hard.

The character design is terrible. Frodo, Merry, and Pippin look like reject members of the Beetles. Sam is way, and I mean extremely, too fat. Saruman the WHITE is wearing RED. Aragorn looks like Tom Lee Jones in "The Missing". Elrond looks like Julius Caesar. None of the men are wearing pants. And on a final note, Gollum sounds like Tony Blair.

What is with the visuals??? Please God, tell me what was Bakshi doing. The Orcs, the Balrog, the Black Riders. They are all real people in cheap costumes cut into the movie. It looks terrible. Helm's Deep is almost unwatchable.

If you are a fan of the book, you might enjoy its accuracy. But I warn all. Don't watch this movie. It is so bad, that they stopped at the Two Towers, and never made Return of the King.
