Now, I have to clearly confess that I have made a really bad mistake. If you read my review for the film, "Gone With The Wind," you can see that I state a hundred times that that is the greatest movie of all time. Now, I have watched Lawrence Of Arabia. And I have to say THIS is the greatest Movie Of All time. For all you Gone With The Wind fans, I have to say I'm sorry, but I have changed my mind.
Now, on to my review...
I have watched Lawrence Of Arabia for the first time in my life and I have to say it is simply brilliant. David Lean proves that a film can be clearly stunning and equaly beautiful.
STORY (SPOILERS)
The Story is about a man named T.E. Lawrence (Thomas Edward Lawrence) who is sent into the tribes Of Arabia. And as he learns their way and proves himself right by doing to impossible (they crown him because he rescued a warrior from the Nefud, which is the hottest place on earth. You can even feel the heat on screen). He then leads the Arabian through several victories. But this movie is not just about war, it's about Lawrence. This film shows the many sides of the unknowable Lawrence, and his deepest, darkest secrets: he enjoys to kill.
ACTING
This might be the role of O'Toole's life as he single-handedly portrays Lawrence. The supporting cast, including Oman Sharif, Alec Guiness, and Anthony Quinn are knockouts. The one obvious thing of this movie is there are no female speaking parts, not even a female in sight.
DIRECTION
David Lean, director of Dr. Zhivago, was heavily judged if he can top his masterpiece, The Bridge On The River Kwai. He then came out with another masterpiece, a film so great it is hailed by many as the greatest movie of all time. Lean did a great job on this movie, with great shots of the stunning desert. Being one of the greatest and beautifully shot films of all time, Lawrence is filled with great spectacular shots of the sunrise. There are two scenes that I love, the first one is the rescue of Gasim. The shots where Lawrence and his child friend spot eachother from yards apart. And then the wide shot of them approaching eachother. The other favoutrite scene I love is the arrival of Sharif Ali, as his camal miraculousy floats in the air because of a mirage. OUtstanding work, Mr. Lean.
CINEMATOGRAPHY
As I said earlier, Lawrence Of Arabia is one of the best shot movies of all time. The cinematographer who worked on this movie really knoew what he was doing.
MUSIC
Maurice Jarre is one of the greatest film composers of all time (the greatest being John Williams). The main theme for this movie is one of the greatest and most recognizable scores of all time. There was a good reason why the music for this movie was rated #3 on AFI's greatest scores list.
The music heavily matches the scene. If there is a weird situation, it is accompanied by strange sounds, which is fantastic.
