Kirk's Best Western
by Anthony (movies profile)
Dec 3, 2004
This movie, along with "Gunfight At The OK Corral" ranks as Kirk Douglas' best cowboy movie. The story line is similar to the already done "High Noon," my only knock against the effort. Douglas plays the role of the lone lawman facing down a powerful foe with a sense of impending doom. As with Marshall Will Kane in "Noon," the writers engineered a personal element in the hero's resolve, in this case, the murder of Douglas' wife. The wife was an Indian woman, and the story takes a swipe at prevailing prejudice of the time.
If the story was unoriginal, Douglas is superb as the granite jawed marshall, a characterization he made famous. He is supported by a strong cast. Anthony Quinn is quite imposing as the intiminating force caught between his best friend and his only son. Earl Holliman is convincing as the weak, impulsive, bad boy son. High production value and visuals along with strong direction make for an entertaining story for Western fans. |
