Didn't Live Up To Any Hype

From what I've read from most people this is either a genius piece of work or an awful, heretical piece of crap. The film really doesn't live up to either side though.
The film is actually kind of boring. Religion is very interesting to me, so I really thought this would be an interesting movie. By the end of the movie I was glad it was over. I had to force myself to watch the whole thing.
The acting in the movie is top noche though. It really is incredible and that's all I can say about it. Even David Bowie is good as a non-wizard or alien.
The movie looked cheaply made. It really looked like a very low budget film, which was a very stark contrast to the acting.
The relationships examined in the film are interesting. Jesus and Judas being best friends is a very interesting partnership which is examined very well in the film.
Jesus' "last temptation" is what everyone gets in a fit about. Is it really that heretical? Well, if Jesus was fully man and fully God (as the Bible teaches), wouldn't he have the sexual desires (though perfect and pure) of any man? Also he did ask God to "take this cup" from him if there was another way. So to have Jesus picture a world where he married, had children, and didn't die really isn't horriblly heretical. The only heretical part of the movie may be the implication that Jesus wasn't really the "Son of God", but just a really good prophet, but what can be expected from a non-Christian film?
An interesting movie in some aspects; it just runs a little slow and long. |
