Disturbing, not scary....

First off, those really wanting to see why people in the 70's freaked out upon viewing "Last House on the Left" should try and find the least edited version they can. I know this sounds like a no-brainer, but it's a point worth mentioning. Many of the versions floating around the market are old British edits where the viewer is lucky to see even half the gore of the uncut.
There isn't much to the story line. A couple of All-American girls fall prey to a gang of psychos in the woods. The gang then meets the parents of one of the slain girls and the gang gets what's coming to them. Suspense really isn't this film's strong point. Neither is the acting. Mystery Science Theatre 3000 would have a field day with the acting in this one.

Those accustomed to the more mainstream direction that the horror genre has taken in the last twenty years should go into "Last House on the Left" with an open mind. It's really not a scary movie so much as a disturbing movie. Watch it even today and the murder and rape scenes look as if they were filmed with an old hand cam, giving the viewer the impression at some points that what they are seeing is authentic and not acted. The music that accompanies the film, especially during the gory scenes seems to have no place in the movie, further adding to the disturbing element. There are certainly more gory and disturbing films out there, but for those who want to see Wes Craven's work back when he was polishing his skills for the Freddy movies, this isn't a bad place to start. On the same note, there's quite a bit of sadistic violence and if seeing innocent girls brutally slaughtered to the point of disembowelment by people who really look like they're enjoying their work, then it might be a good idea to stick to "Scream" Hey, it's still Wes Craven.
