Science Fiction/Fantasy
This film was the first time I ever saw Matthew Broderick in and I really enjoyed his humor/style and comic delivery which he also used in "Ferris Bueler's Day Off" (another film that is a classic!) It was also the first time I'd seen Michelle Pffeifer and knew instantly that this woman would make film history as one of the most beautifully, luminiscent actresses on screen. A haunting blend of adventure and fantasy about a pair of cursed lovers who are transformed into animal form (she a hawk, he a black wolf) during alternate periods of the day due to the curse of a spurned would-be lover of the character played by Michelle. Rutger Hauer (also of Blade Runner fame)plays the black knight in a sulky brooding manner reminiscent of the hero role in "Angel" which gets slightly annoying after an hour of brooding. However, it's to be expected as he is stuck in a situation where he finds he is powerless to rescue his love without assistance by a pickpocket! Now Broderick, who provides comic relief, is appealing as the couple's young friend, and ultimately, their rescuer almost steals the show, in my opinion. It remains one of my favorite films in this genre. As to those of you who didn't appreciate the film's sound track or special effects, I suggest that they prefer "Werewolf in London" to this tender version of man/wolf. The 2 Academy Award Nominations: Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing speak for itself. Personally, I enjoyed it immensely and have seen it often as it is in my collection. Enjoy!
