Wonderful film....

I've always loved this picture, possibly because Scorsese manages to explore some of his favorite themes in surroundings that are not usually attributed to him. It's all well and good to do great work when you're comfortable (i.e. "Goodfellas"); but when you're not in your wheelhouse and STILL do great work, that's something else again.
The film is full of surprises, not the least of which is that Jerry Lewis proves himself fully DeNiro's equal in it. His performance is brilliant - understated, sad, uncompromising. It is he, rather than DeNiro, whom we wait to see onscreen. |
