A miss for Marty

The King of Comedy is one of those rare Martin Scorsese films that simply doesn't work. It was his first effort at doing a more comedic type of work and while it shows a great deal of creativity it doesn't hold together as a coherent film.
The King of Comedy can't seem to decide whether it wants to be a comedy or whether it wants to be a character study of a wannabe comedian. It tends to come off as more of the later which is not surprising given Scorsese's flair for character studies. Overall, I would consider it to be in the same vein as New York, New York as an interesting idea that did not really work. If you want to see a better Scorsese comedy watch the excellent After Hours.
There were two interesting things to watch for in this film. First, the dream sequences that Rupert Pupkin has have a true surreal quality that is quite interesting. Second, you also get to see DeNiro's chamelon acting abilities on display again and also his comic talents especially in the stand up bit at the end of the film. |
