Great movie!

Professional movie critics never give good reviews to "goofy" movies, because they like to think that they're doing important work: they prefer to review dull movies by people like Merryl Streep.
But "The Jerk" is not only a hilarious movie, but it's timeless and classic: hundreds of years from now it will still be funny. Martin plays Navin Johnson, who wears some kind of ridiculous (fighter-pilot?) hat when he goes outside. Martin has said that he finds one of the funniest lines in the movie to be when he is hitch-hiking to St. Louis, and a man in a pickup truck stops and says, "St. Louis?" and Johnson earnestly says, "No. Navin Johnson." Then, he accepts a ride for perhaps 30 yards before getting out when the driver says he's gone as far as he's going.
This is more than just a slapstick comedy. It has some serious morals to it that make it important.
Steve Martin is a good, naive man who is up against the complexities of real life. At the end, the movie shows that love is all that counts: his black family loves him, although he's white, has blown his fortune that he made, and is now poor and a drunken bum. |
