heck of a job to repeat the original but good job

Key difference between Jaws the original and jaws 2 is obviously Steven Spielberg. However director Jeannot Szwarc really saved this movie. He put in some astonishing action sequences at times and wonderful visuals and went about developing the characters from the first movie so credit to him. If a second rate director took charge of this this would be just as bad as the follow ups to this like 3 and 4.
Other than the magnificent acting of Roy Scheider and a good cameo from mayor Murray Hamilton the acting was pretty diabolical from some of the kids in the movie and the deputy cop Kramer, is the master of overacting no wonder Spielberg reportedly didn't like him! A few of the girls who screamed and stuff and went into shock were very believable but the guys seemed a little to theatre-ish for them to really blend. But its a minor flaw. The shark itself was not great and scenes would have been all the more powerful if it looked a little less mechanical however it isn't blatant and easy to overlook with some terrific camera work, especially with the shots of the fin and behind the fin gave us something new. The water skier scene is cool and especially some of the set pieces when the kids on the sail boat are terrorised by the shark its genuinely terrifying at times and was worthy of some of the scenes in the first one.
Probably the best one is when one of the kids falls off the boat fails to get to the boat in time, gets attacked and gets lifted waist high in the water at high speed and smashes straight into the side of the boat he then clutches onto it for dear life before dissapearing into the depths. Pretty scary scene.
This film aint oscar worthy by any stretch but far from disgraced the first one. Jaws is a classic of not just horror thrillers but amongst the all time classic of all movies. Jaws 2 is a straight out popcorn monster movie- alot of fun some real thrills and i really enjoyed it. Credit to the director, but why did the studio have to get greedy and make the diabolical 3 and 4??????????!!!!!!! |
