People think of It's a Wonderful Life as a feel-good movie because of that happy, Christmas ending...George Bailey (James Stewart (Rear Window)) running down the streets of Bedford Falls yelling "Merry Christmas!" to anyone and everyone. But, what many people seem to forget, is the darkness that pervades the first hour and a half. For instance in an early scene, standing upon a bridge above the dark river below, Bailery looks down, contemplating suicide. It's A Wonderful Life is a film about broken dreams. However, the message at the end is that some of the best things in life are the ones we never think about. It shows us how we affect people in ways we never imagined. It appears the film will be forever pigeonholed as a holiday film, but it really is so much more. It's an American masterpiece with a message. |
