"It Happened one Night" is considered the 35th greatest movie of all time according to the American Film Institure, but does it really belong up there? Here are the things which make the movie stand out: it is made in 1934 and has Clark Gable taking off his shirt (very provocative) and show Colbert's shoulders; there is sexual innuendo in it, very much to the same extent as a film that is made 20 years later, it is considered to be the first romantic-comedy, the cinematography is amazing for its time, and the acting is great. "It Happened one Night" is great in its technical and creative achievement, but it forgets to give us a fun story. THe dialogue is very good, but the pace of the movie is slow and I found myself waiting for the end. This is not because I think old movies are boring, it is because this one is boring. "City Lights" (1931) has great humor and I was laughing very hard during this movie. There are bits of humor in this screwball comedy, but there isn't enough to keep it interesting. |
