This movie served as the inspiration for Bewitched. It is made by the famed director Rene Clair whose fantasy comedies remain classics. In this one a wicked (but beautiful) witch seeks revenge on the descendant of someone who burned her at the stake centuries earlier. She decides the best way to reek revenge is to make him fall in lover with her so she can scorn him, but when she accidentally drinks her own love potion things change. There is no mother-in-law in this one, but Cecil Kellaway is superb as the warlock father-in-law. If you liked Bewitched you have to see this one and even if you didn't it is worth a look. A true classic in the moody Rene Clair style. |
