I watched this movie many times, making this one of my favorites. Stage actor Paul Muni's film debut as an emotionally-charged war WWI veteran who was wrongly thrown in jail and faced many tormenting days on the chain gang. The film has caused a major change in the prison system in the South, effectively ending this brutal treatment of prisoners. Muni had nailed the part very well. I'm sure you'll agree with me. Without this film, this brutally shameful practice would've continued on. Now this film had a social impact on America in the early 30's. |
