Overall, I disliked this movie for many reasons. The story is oversimplified to cater to little kids.I read this book when I was younger two times and that is why the plotchanging was not a happy thing to me. At first the movie stayed true to the story. This, with the great backgrounds gave the viewer the illusion of a decent movie. The orc scene was changed, and Gandalf in the book was more capable in the reading of runes. I quite strongly detested the song "The Greatest Adventure", the lryics are sappy, and it is musically jarring. Also, on the visuals what happened to Bilbo's hair?! The wood elves do not look anywhere the way I think they ought to look. On the otherhand, Gandalf, Gondor and the backgrounds are nicely done. The visuals attemped to redeem this movie. The actors do try in this movie, and voiceovers range from average to somewhat above average.
In the end this is a "family film" created to entertain little kids on a probably slim budget. So, some little kids may like it, but all other members of the little kids' families will probably strongly dislike it. So, I guess it grudgingly earns a "D" for Dreadful, after all it was meant to be for little kids, not for their moms, dads, older brothers or older sisters. Though, I think part of this select audience will find it very boring. |
