I saw this memorable thriller last night, for the first time in like 10 years.Lemme tell you that it hasn't lost a bit of its impact. This is a top notch horror/thriller.Rutger Hauer is horrifyingly brilliant as John Ryder, the demented Hitcher, who murders everyone who picks him up and then some. The guy seems to have supernatural abilities,he's impossible to get away from and he can't be stopped.Who he really is the movie never says which gives the proceedings a really eerie feel. Why does he kill? Who knows? 80's actor C.Thomas Howell (Soul Man)plays a kid driving a car from Chicago to California who happens to pick up Ryder and manages to kick him out of the passesnger door before Ryder kills him.But that's not the end of Ryder. He follows Howell around and plays mind games and cat & mouse with him, framing him to look like the real killer. It's like he has some sick type of fixation with the Howell character. What makes this movie so unnerving is the psychological horror and suspense that run rampant through the whole film. You never know where Ryder will pop up next but you can be sure that he will pop up again. This is a real nail biter with great dusty Texas scenery and it will keep you on the edge of your seat, maintain your interest and the scene with Jennifer Jason-Leigh and the semi trucks will shock you and sicken you. I pretty much guarantee it.If you haven't seen this rare gem then I suggest going to the video store and renting it. Yeah, it's an 80's flick but give it a shot-it hasn't aged a bit. Top rate stuff. |
