If you're wondering which of these hit-or-miss reviews to believe, please let the atrocious grammar of those who somehow enjoyed "Hairspray" indicate the overall unreliability of their opinion. I have seen- and been electrified and moved by- the Broadway musical more than once, and after the very first spoken line of the film, I was disgusted by how insulting of the show were the grade-school level of acting, lack of editing or second takes, and direction (if you could call it that) of someone I could easily believe had never worked in film, tv, OR theater at all! There was frequent dead air, ZERO interest added by background music or camerawork, and the few glimpses of originality implemented, like the casting of a male actor in the role of Tracy's mother, were executed without originality. In general, the mood of the piece was stale to say the least. The only redeeming qualities were the color of the period costumes (although those were clearly the 80s version of of 50s garb) and the dancing of styles rarely seen in movies. But seriously, I have NEVER SEEN WORSE ACTING. You could actually imagine the exact prompt the script gave to each action or line by how unimaginatively it was performed. There's a reason it's only on TV at 2 in the morning.

Too bad, because it has a really great message. :/ Get thee to Broadway!
