If this film was as bad as Manos: The Hands of Fate, I would still give Chaplin kudos for his courage. Luckily, this film is outstanding, a satirical masterpiece. We need more people like Chaplin and more films like The Great Dictator.
Although Chaplin was commenting on the Fascism of his day, the message could also be applied to today. The speech at the end, so criticized in its day and our day, brought me on my feet, in tears, applauding like I never did before. Never had I heard the truth put so simply.
The Great Dictator should be required viewing. |
