Released in 1967, The Graduate was a critical and financial hit. At the time it had the third biggest gross of any movie, and it went on to garner seven Oscar nominations. Opinions differ on how well it stands up today, but I, like most, believe it is still a fine movie. I wouldn't put it as the 7th best movie ever as AFI did, but I can understand such high placement.

Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) is a recent graduate of Dartmouth College. He has no idea what he is going to do in life. However, one night he is seduced by Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft), a middle aged woman, whom he knows because she is his father's law partner's wife. Initially, nothing happens, but the two eventually begin an affair. However, he is later introduced to her daughter Elaine Robinson (Katharine Ross), whom he immediately falls for. The problem is Mrs. Robinson does not want the two to have a relationship.

One of the films' strengths is Director Mike Nichols ability to effectively mix the comedy and drama. The film certainly has its share of hilarious moments, but can also be touching.

The film has a few flaws, but almost all deal with the ending. It is a little over the top, and after being copied so many times, a little cliched. However, the film tries, unlike modern movies to make it realistic. For instance, it is believable Ben has great endurance because he was cross-country captain in college. There are some logical flaws and other minor mistakes, but they are hardly a problem.

The acting in the film is nothing short of absolutely superb. There were three Oscar nominations for the acting, including for Dustin Hoffman as Ben. Ben isn't a great guy, but he is likable. This was Hoffman's break out role, and its not surprising considering his great performance and the financial success of the film. Also very good is Katharine Ross as the conflicted Elaine, whose emotions range as much as any character in the film. However, neither performance comes close to that of Anne Bancroft. Simply put, her turn as Mrs. Robinson is one of the finest female performances of all time.

It would be impossible to write a review of The Graduate without mentioning the soundtrack. It is probably the most famous ever for any movie, and it is also probably the best. Simon and Garfunkel wrote many famous tunes, but the ones featured in The Graduate are as good as any they ever made.

Ultimately, The Graduate is a very, very, good movie. Despite a few flaws, the movie is still amazing. Here's to you Mike Nichols, Dustin Hoffman, and Anne Bancroft for creating a movie for the ages.
