If "The Goonies" had been made today, it would have garnered a PG-13 rating instead of the PG rating that has allowed it to become one of the most beloved kids movies of all time. Having said that, I'm going to write about why I love this movie so much.
"The Goonies" is such a fun movie to watch, so that's one reason why it's a classic. The plot has a few flaws (there are numerous references to scenes that have been cut from the final movie.) The themes of friendship, success, and a sense of belonging are all omnipresent in most kids movies, but the way in which it is presented in this movie is different from the rest. While the outcome is somewhat predictable, getting there is a lot more fun than it is with most kids movies. Adults who watch this movie with their kids most likely are going to enjoy it in the same way as their kids do.
The acting is pretty good, especially by Chunk and the Fratellis. I especially like the curmudgeonette Mama Fratelli and her opera-singing son Jake.
The visuals in the middle of the movie are the most impressive. The tunnel looks quite real and the special effects (especially the wishing well part) are cool. They're a bit cheesy when compared to those of 2006, yet timeless because they're still great to see.
I don't recommend this movie for kids younger than nine. There's some language in it and some suggestive material that parents may not want to expose their kids to just yet. I do, however, think that this is great for the pre-teen and adolescent set. It's neither immature nor too sexual or violent in nature, and you can watch it with your parents without feeling awkward.
So, if you've decided that "The Goonies" is for you, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did when I saw it! |
