I have a bad headache right now so I'll be briefer then normal. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly may be one of the most stylish Westerns ever made. I definitely agree with the general assertation about this one in that the style does outweigh the substance by a long shot. That being said it's an entertaining story and while it may lack in feasability it's fun to watch the journey.
Blondie and Tuco are partners that dislike each other on a personal level. They work together because they make a good team and are good at what they do...scamming people out of money. The relationship goes sour and Blondie (Eastwood) leaves Tuco in the middle of the desert. Tuco gets out eventually and seeks his revenge. He's about to leave Blondie for dead when a confederate wagon approaches. All the soldiers are dead except one barely clinging to life. He tells Tuco of a confederate treasure buried in a graveyard. Tuco gets everything but the name on the grave itself. Of course the last dying words of the soldier are the name on the grave...to Blondie. The two are forced to team up again to find the $200,000 as each of them knows half of the secret. They are also trailed by the crafty Angel Eyes, a hired gun who wants the money for himself and will stop it nothing to get it.
The story plays out as kind of an epic western. There are many obvious plot holes, but I don't think it really mattered. This movie was meant to be fun more then it was serious. There was alot more humor then I expected thrown in.
The acting was good, Eastwood was well Eastwood. Tuco (Eli Wallach) was a little over the top as the Mexican bandit. Angel Eyes was also played well by Lee Van Cleef.
The strong suit of this movie was obviously the style with which it was shot and the epic old western feel it had. ALot of the time I felt like I was actually in that extreme desert heat. Any movie that can make you feel like that is definitely succeeding on some level. I'm sure for 1966 making a movie on this large a scale was unheard of.
I enjoyed The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, but it's almost three hour running time will discourage some. I will admit it is a slow moving movie, but if you make it through you'll feel it was worth it.
