This movie and Robin Williams - and Adrian Cronauer himself - did the USA's invasion of Vietnam the biggest favour it could.
Robin William's Cronauer was perfect and reflected the actual relief felt by troops in the invasion's early years, before it became apparent - to even the biggest rednecks - that the invasion was an unjust, unpopular and illegal military act of aggression that was doomed to failure.
With "Platoon" not too far away, GMV was blessed by not recreating or referring to, scenes of the horrific sexual assaults against children and women by depraved American troops.
This was a feel-good-about-our-invasion movie which worked while not losing sight of its condemnation of the imposed conflict. |
