And be memorable. Two muffins on forks dance the Cakewalk. Charlie's old boot is the main course at the snowbound prospectors' meal, the laces doubling as spaghetti, the sole as steak (the nails are the bones) and the boiled leather as jerky. The prospecting little Tramp is almost shot and eaten when his hungry-crazed friend thinks he's an oversized chicken. The love story is slow and pathetic, but even though he doesn't get the girl (as in almost all his films) this time he strikes rich and ends a millionaire. The cliff-hanging scene must have coined the frase, because it's the grandaddy of all cliff-hangers: a whole cabin tottering on the brink of a chasm and the back door oppening into nothingness is what screaming at the serials was all about. Though not entirely 24 karat itself, The Gold Rush shines.
